The landscape is characterised by the Makalani palm trees, which are found all over the region around Grootfontein. From  their ivory-coloured kernels - the so called “plant ivory” - native people produce lovely carvings.

 

 

 

Most of the year, nature is affected by drought. But during the rainy season from January to April, the farm land presents itself in lush green. Bushland and open pasture for the cattle, horses and sheep take turns.
